Stagecoach (1939)

January 8, 2013 by Felipe Rosa

Stagecoach: still great, very exciting. It’s a great array of characters in display there, and John Wayne’s introduction remains great. 1939 was indeed a magical year for movies.

Knight and Day

January 7, 2013 by Felipe Rosa

Knight and Day: preposterous action scenes, but the purpose of not to be taken seriously is quite taken seriously. It’s a pity that Peter Sarsgaard is not used more.

Burn After Reading

January 7, 2013 by Felipe Rosa

Burn After Reading: nice little farce. Great cast at the top of their game, for this kind of material. It’s not the best Coen Bros flick, but then again, it’s not supposed to be.

Edward Scissorhands

January 7, 2013 by Felipe Rosa

Edward Scissorhands: a cute fable, but a little too light from a story point of view. The atmosphere is nice, the film has a nice, fable-y look, Depp is fascinating, but I still felt something was missing.

Toy Story & Toy Story 2

January 7, 2013 by Felipe Rosa

‎‎‎Toy Story & Toy Story 2: seeing them together for the first time in many years. They remain great fun, and still resonate with me, thematically. And indeed, the way the arch is completed in Toy Story 3 makes me believe that this is one of the greatest trilogies of all time.

In a Lonely Place

January 7, 2013 by Felipe Rosa

In a Lonely Place: another solid one. Great double-header, great Gloria Grahame double-header. Gotta love the unseasy feeling, the doubts. Great drama, about the effects of what happened, not about what happened or who did it.

The Big Heat

January 7, 2013 by Felipe Rosa

The Big Heat: powerful, grim. Very strong story, I didn’t expect it to go where it went, being it from when it is. The coffee pot scene is quite chilling. And, which was actually noted by Scorsese in a bonus, this is the first noir in the last 10 or so I have seen that did not have a dolly-in into the main character’s face. (Yes, I noticed that by myself!)

Toy Story 3

January 7, 2013 by Felipe Rosa

Toy Story 3: remarkable. Fantastic. Brilliant. I really don’t know what to say. It has some amazing sequences, that can beat the hell out of most action movies released in this or any summer. Or winter. The characters are great, their conflict is sincere and well-put. Dang, really. Oh, and those tears at the end. Well, you know, hmm, the 3D glasses, hmm, still need some work done.

Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time

January 7, 2013 by Felipe Rosa

Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time: Mike Newell, really? C’mon, how can the man the directed Al Pacino in one of his best roles of the last 20-30 years have fallen so low? Oh, well, what did I expect? Dumb, and that’s what I got.
