Conviction (2010)

January 9, 2013 by Felipe Rosa

Conviction: sometimes the truth has the ability to be uninteresting, seem coincidental, almost forced. Maybe that was not the case with this story, but that’s how the movie portrayed it. So, at the end, we have nothing that truly stands out in this competent but pedestrian product.

Hereafter

January 9, 2013 by Felipe Rosa

Hereafter: Clint Eastwood continues to be one of the masters of understated stories. It could be the music he composes. Still, this may be a tougher sell than others because of the subject matter.

Red (2010)

January 9, 2013 by Felipe Rosa

Red: let’s not expect more of this than what it is, an action movie. However, it’s an action movie with a fine cast, and that’s the nice thing about it. It’s a pity they showed in the trailer, but the shot of Bruce Willis leaving the police car is cool indeed.

Secretariat

January 9, 2013 by Felipe Rosa

Secretariat: it’s probably hard to generate excitement or suspense when telling the story of one of the top athletes of the century. But the movie feels very flat nevertheless. And, if for nothing else, the last race suggests the movie should be called “Secretariat’s Owner”. The big climatic event felt undershown, and honestly, that’s a big sin.

It’s Kind of a Funny Story

January 9, 2013 by Felipe Rosa

It’s Kind of a Funny Story: well, it actually ain’t, not in a ha-ha sense anyway. But that’s fine, as the movie works in its intended level: as a lighthearted, fantasious reminder that it’s OK to cry for help every once in a while, that a gentle push can work and that generally it’s not really that bad. Cute.

‘Tamara Drewe’

January 9, 2013 by Felipe Rosa

‘Tamara Drewe’: curiously unpleasant movie. Again that movie-killing combination of unpleasant and uninteresting characters, and to top that a dull story.

Sherlock Holmes (2009)

January 9, 2013 by Felipe Rosa

Sherlock Holmes: It’s a fun start for the franchise. Robert Downey Jr. does a great job, as usual. They have a difficult job showing Holmes doing his thing without it seeming either so easy we could do it, but at the same time not so abstract and unlikely it seems planted.

Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps

January 8, 2013 by Felipe Rosa

‎‎Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps: that Oliver Stone is heavy-handed, everybody knows. He at least told some interesting and compelling stories in the past. This one is neither. The easy ending is quite a letdown, too.

RocknRolla

January 8, 2013 by Felipe Rosa

RocknRolla: It’s a bit fun and a bit cool, but the choice of playing it straight, unlike Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels and Snatch subtracts from it. It then lacks a stronger, more charismatic center.
