The Bank Job (2008)

January 12, 2013 by Felipe Rosa

The Bank Job: above everything else, entertaining. If the story is close to the truth or not is beside the point; this is not supposed to be a documentary and even those eschew from it sometimes. All the elements, and there are a lot of interwined ones, are clear, which is a nice little feat.

Finding Neverland

January 12, 2013 by Felipe Rosa

Finding Neverland: every film, perhaps every piece of art, is manipulative. The trick is to not let the trick be seen through the seems, and this film is one fine example of this. Extremely well-made, with good acting turns by the principal actors, it leads you without making you feel lead. In that regard, it works quite well. It may be one of the best of the typical Miramax products.

Shutter Island – Revisit

January 12, 2013 by Felipe Rosa

Shutter Island: the second view doesn’t push this past a decently good movie category, despite the fact that the credentials are first notch. It certainly is too smart a story for its own good, one that may not work all that well after all. Can’t say (and don’t care) why people say they “saw it coming”, even knowing it already. Still love the fluidity of the camera. See what I wrote before: Shutter Island

Toy Story 3 – Revisit

January 12, 2013 by Felipe Rosa

Toy Story 3: whatever I said before stands. Still the best movie of 2010, upon a review. It hits the same notes, packs the same emotional punch and the characters remain as rich as they felt the first time. I don’t think there is bigger compliment than saying I was breaking down all over again at the end. See what I wrote before: Toy Story 3

The Killing (1956)

January 12, 2013 by Felipe Rosa

The Killing: tight as a drum, not a gram of unnecessary fat present on this little (as in, cheaply and quickly done, not in value) gem of a movie. Great cast, exactly what it needed; great camera movements (the tracking shots are all beautiful). There is no wonder why Kubrick became, well, Kubrick.

Source Code

January 12, 2013 by Felipe Rosa

Source Code: it’s a new coat of paint in an old car, but the car is a good one. It’s still a nice concept that is well-executed, with a nice cast. Very entertaining movie, and it’s nice to see Chicago, especially looking this good too.

Win Win (2011)

January 12, 2013 by Felipe Rosa

Win Win: a pleasurable but unremarkable experience. With the exception of the sport chosen, which is somewhat unusual, there aren’t many risks taken here, as far as the story goes. The acting is solid, with Paul Giamatti being his usual great with a role that has more swetness and less bite than usual. It’s always a pleasure to watch him work.

Pat and Mike

January 12, 2013 by Felipe Rosa

Pat and Mike: pleasurable enough, and of course oozing the marvel of the cast, but still somewhat underwhelming compared to other romantic comedies of the time. The dialogue doesn’t spark as much as it does, and the whole thing showcases more the athetic abilities of Kaherine Hepburn than the story itself. Still, no comparison to the quality of the contemporary products of the genre.

Limitless

January 12, 2013 by Felipe Rosa

Limitless: one didn’t even have to take one the pills to know that the story would have huge gaps in logic and some things that would likely get ignored by the story later on. The one saving grace of this movie are the well-considered visual solutions that match the story.
