Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy

January 13, 2013 by Felipe Rosa

Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy: flawlessly crafted from top to bottom, with great cinematopraphy, costume and set design. The cast is absolutely perfect, serving the serpentine (pleasurably so) plot. Adult, intelligent movies like this one are hard to find.

Young Adult

January 13, 2013 by Felipe Rosa

Young Adult: anchored in a masterful performance by Charlize Theron, this is a very pleasurable, if a bit short, film. Not that the story isn’t told (It is and well told, in fact), but more time with the characters would be welcome. It’s also very funny, in a way that is unlike what it was sold as.

A Dangerous Method

January 13, 2013 by Felipe Rosa

A Dangerous Method: the main problem with this one is how academic it is. It may be my lack of knowledge and interest about the main subject, but of course that also means that the story was not made interesting enough for the non-initiated. The male actors are very good, but Keira Knightley wasn’t able to pull it off in her early scenes.

Shame

January 13, 2013 by Felipe Rosa

Shame: like its protagonist, beautiful on the surface (I honestly adore all those lenghty takes), but somewhat distant, even empty. Michael Fassbender’s and Carey Mulligan’s performances are very interesting to watch, but the characters are uncharted territory, almos; both are too monomaniacal.

Star Wars

January 13, 2013 by Felipe Rosa

Star Wars: still one of the ultimate adventure films made. The main strengths here are the original, rich setting and, mostly, the naivete and hopefullness of the story. The story is simple because it needs to be universal (or universally grasped). Another factor of relevance are the characters and their humor; Han Solo may be the most important character of the series (not in a “story” sense, but in a “general feeling” sense) because of his playfulness. Melancholia

January 13, 2013 by Felipe Rosa

Melancholia: another rigorous exercise of the dark side of the human soul by the master. Despite the camera that is too alive, there are a lot of strikingly beautiful images to be seen. However, as in fact is usually the case, the great acting does not make it any less unbearable to watch (which is not saying this is a bad movie at all, just that it digs too deep). Control and the illusion thereof would describe it better.

Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith

January 13, 2013 by Felipe Rosa

Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith: while it’s in closer in the general tone to the original trilogy, the true reason for it being generally appreciated is because the story is told and all loose ends are (a bit too conveniently) wrapped. It is, nevertheless, the more efficient because it’s less uneven. Read also: Star Wars: The Phantom Menace Star Wars: Attack of the Clones

Star Wars: Attack of the Clones

January 13, 2013 by Felipe Rosa

Star Wars: Attack of the Clones: while this film hold the least typical moments of the series, the courtship, which are a great drag, it also has one of the most exhilarating, the last lightsaber duel. Such unevenness mostly subtracts, but there is relief that the worst is over, when compared to the first episode. Read also: Star Wars: The Phantom Menace

Star Wars: The Phantom Menace

January 13, 2013 by Felipe Rosa

Star Wars: The Phantom Menace: not a film to be taken seriously, not to the extent the series’ fan do anyway. Taken at face value, it’s moderately fun and definitely silly (some elements, such as the Gungans, excessively so. This is the silliest of the whole series), but that goes hand in hand with the inspiration for the series. One thing is perfectly clear, however: had the saga started with this one, it would not be the success it is.
