Argo

January 15, 2013 by Felipe Rosa

‎Argo: efficient thriller that, on the surface, is a great followup to the muscular film-making seen before by Affleck; notably, its great mix of humor and tension. However, this one surpasses a label of mere entertainment with the layers presented: first, a great comment on sticking one’s hands where they are not supposed to go; most importantly, by being meta-linguistic and talking about the power of a good story. A good story needs a good delivery to be sold, and […]

The Master

January 15, 2013 by Felipe Rosa

The Master: this film is a bit of a head-scratcher; partially, because the two central characters are unable to make much sense, but mostly because while there is much to be appreciated, enjoyment is not a result. It sports beautiful images and shots (here’s my bias for lengthy tracking shots showing up again), amazing performances by both Philip Seymour Hoffman and Joaquin Phoenix (in two very distinct ways), but at the end of the day, it is a film one […]

The Earrings of Madame de…

January 15, 2013 by Felipe Rosa

The Earrings of Madame de…: great elegance oozes out of this small masterpiece. From the dazzling costume design to the way the dialogue (full of barbs and hidden meaning) is suavely delivered by the cast to, most notably, the incredible camera work. My bias towards lengthy tracking shots is well known, and few times I’ve seen such an amazing collection of them. All those elements serve the story quite well. I’ll say it again for effect: this is a small […]

Looper

January 15, 2013 by Felipe Rosa

Looper: the story is almost too smart for its own good; “almost” being the operative word here. A mind-bender as only a time-travel film can be, it’s a fun film nevertheless, a mix of noir and western in a sci-fi setting, one that keeps you thinking about the story for a while. Good looking cast, good looking film.

Trouble With the Curve

January 14, 2013 by Felipe Rosa

Trouble With the Curve: despite the lazy, almost sloppy, story, this film still touches a few nice emotional chords. The laurels here go with the cast, in general able to sell the obvious situations the cliched characters are in.

Arbitrage

January 14, 2013 by Felipe Rosa

Arbitrage: the definition of arbitrage, roughly, is a group of trades that will yield, in no uncertain terms, a gain; such concept, however, is nowhere present in the film, neither objectively nor figuratively. It’s neither here not there, but the opportunistic title is a sign of the sloppy filmmaking present. Uneven acting (Richard Gere can play the sleazy charmer, but the emotionally charged moments are beyond him), disjointed story (the many elements are there to form a whole, not because […]

Lawless

January 14, 2013 by Felipe Rosa

Lawless: unsatisfying film. Partly because the least interesting actor is playing the central character; Shia LaBeouf has an interesting name, but he is unable to project the character’s menace, drive or charm. Additionally, the film feels unfocused, as some characters disappear for long periods of time; that means that the writing was unable to fill that hole properly.

Green Zone – Revisit

January 14, 2013 by Felipe Rosa

Green Zone: upon a second view, the urgency with which the film is shot serves the good story well. While it doesn’t really bring anything new to the table, it still portrays well the complexity of the situation, while still allowing for an exciting thriller. Matt Damon brings his usual intelligence and integrity to the character. Read what I wrote before: Green Zone

Premium Rush

January 14, 2013 by Felipe Rosa

Premium Rush: the film smartly moves fast enough, both forward and backward, to obscure that the story makes no sense whatsoever and that the only reason the characters exist is to keep moving. That was, obviously, to be expected. Nevertheless, it’s visually exhilarating, and Michael Shannon does a good job.
