A Sad and Beautiful World: Cyril Aris’ romantic journey begins at the birth of two babies, in the same hospital, minutes apart, in a war-torn Beirut; they will meet a few times again, before, perhaps, getting together. As usual, opposites attract, and they differ not only in temperament but also in their views of the country. Yet, they share great chemistry and look great together. Mounia Akl plays the hard-working, dispirited consultant; the screenplay smartly explains the origin of her disillusionment. Hasan Akil, as her pair, plays an upbeat, romantic restaurant owner. Both are charming and effective in their roles. Cinematographer Joe Saade captures the action with a dream-like quality in his images. The film, co-edited by Aris and Nat Sanders, navigates multiple time periods efficiently, creating an emotionally touching film.
