Fifth about The Seventh

The Sun Rises on Us All (Rì Guà Zhōng Tiān)

The Sun Rises on Us All: this intense drama, by CAI Shangjun, tells the story of a woman, pregnant by her married lover, who meets an old boyfriend she left many years ago. There is a lot of baggage to unpack, and the film does so powerfully, but also quietly. XIN Zhilei plays the protagonist, a hard-working woman who made many wrong choices, but is not running away from them; it’s a powerfully touching performance. ZHANG Songwen plays her old boyfriend, a hurting man with good reason to give the protagonist a cold shoulder; it’s also a fine performance. FENG Shaofeng, as her current lover, has a shorter, less crucial role. Director of Photography KIM Hyun-seok shot the film with a dynamic, observant camera, which works to put the viewer close (or not, as the scene demands) to the action. Editors TSAI Yann-shan and Matthieu Laclau give the film a good pace.
