Fifth about The Seventh

Artacho Jurado, Sinfonia de um Arquiteto

Artacho Jurado, Sinfonia de um Arquiteto: Teresa Eça and Pedro Gorski’s documentary tells the trajectory of João Artacho Jurado, a self-educated architect and builder with a unique style, who built several iconic buildings in São Paulo. The documentary is very square and conventional, a pity, given that it portrays such a trailblazer with unconventional ideas about aesthetics. It mixes interviews (with family members, scholars, and newly converted fans) with plenty of images of his work. The interviews, alas, are not particularly insightful about the man, even if they are rather detailed about his trajectory. It was a great decision to record the interviews in the buildings he built, and cinematographer Zé Mario Fontoura frames the interviewees giving plenty of space for Artacho Jurado’s work to shine. Ultimately, the chance to see so much of his work is more interesting than most of what is said about him.
