Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves: John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein don’t take the story they are telling too seriously: enough to tell it effectively and entertainingly, but not enough that it lends the film some unwanted and misplaced seriousness. It follows a ragtag band of adventurers as they quest around the world to perform a heist. The characters are stock for this sort of story: the charming not-so-rascally hero, the also-charming more-rascally antagonist, the evil wizard, and the big-hearted but brutal female fighter, played well respectively by Chris Pine, Hugh Grant, Daisy Head, and Michelle Rodriguez. The best of the bunch is probably Regé-Jean Page, in his shorter role as the incredibly effective but humorless paladin. The film looks bright and colorful, from the costume and production designs (by Amanda Monk and Raymond Chan) to the special effects.
