Bad Luck Banging or Loony Porn: this film doesn’t leave any doubts about how Radu Jude feels about the current cultural landscape of his natural country, Romania. The story allows for an intriguing conversation, as it looks into a teacher that had a sex tape leaked and must defend herself in front of the students’ parents. The structure of the film, however, veers away from the obvious and goes on to show in snippets the perceived corruption, hypocrisy, racism, xenophobia, and homophobia of his people. The first half of the film is very slow, but it plants the seeds that are sown in the end, as the story itself gets back into focus. Katia Pascariu, as the teacher, acts with the proper mix of indignation, surprise, and righteous fury; acting from the supporting players is mostly histrionic, to drive the point home. Catalin Cristutiu’s editing is key, mixing a lot of footage (including quite a bit of very explicit images) and constructing the satire.
