Jujutsu Kaisen 0: The Movie (Gekijou-ban Jujutsu Kaisen 0)

Jujutsu Kaisen 0: The Movie: Park Sung-hoo’s anime, being part of a multimedia franchise, has to strike the balance between explaining just enough of the world’s mythology while leaving some elements for those acquainted with the material to have an extra layer of enjoyment. The film mostly succeeds in telling, essentially, a superhero story with its own horror elements to make it distinct; the setting is certainly fresher than the story. The protagonist is the archetypical unlikely hero, a boy who needs to find the strength within to both will to live and control his powers; his journey, nevertheless, is interesting enough. The supporting characters, as well as the villain, are a colorful and entertaining bunch. The animation is beautiful, with excellent-looking environments; the character design is very interesting, with distinctive looks to them. The editing, by Yanagi Keisuke, is smart, pausing for some exposition in unexpected moments, which raises the humour; the action is furious and refreshingly doesn’t shy away from the expected violence.
