Free Guy: the concept of Shawn Levy’s unabashedly popcorn romp has an interesting concept at its heart. The idea is far from original, but it is well-applied to the gamer universe, and its unpretentious tone makes this funny, sweet and entertaining. Ryan Reynolds fits the bill to play the enamored, naïve, but clearly capable protagonist; Jodie Comer is lovely and convincing in both of her character versions, the virtual kick-ass action-hero and the nerdy, passionate real person; Taika Waititi is cartoony as the villain. The visual effects are appropriately cheesy, as the translation from a videogame to a live-action look asks for; the city where it takes place has that perfect, fantasy-like look which also reminds of a videogame setting.
