The 74th Annual WGA Awards will be handed Sunday, March 20th, 2022.
As I have been doing for a few years, as we get into the awards season, I’ll post the fictional ballots for some of the guild awards, showing what my vote would be if I had one. I will, as a rule, abstain from my fictional vote if I haven’t seen at least half of the nominees. And to be perfectly clear, I’m not a member of any of these guilds and organizations.
The list of nominees can be seen here.
Here it goes:
Documentary Screenplay: abstain (Not seen: Exposing Muybridge, Like a Rolling Stone: The Life & Times of Ben Fong-Torres.)
Original Screenplay: Paul Thomas Anderson, for Licorice Pizza
This film gets so much right: a pair of interesting and relatable main characters, a number of memorable supporting characters, a coming-of-age story that unfurls beautifully, and the capacity to turn extremely funny in a mere second.
Adapted Screenplay: Guillermo del Toro & Kim Morgan, for Nightmare Alley
A good noir, as the name suggests, turns its gaze towards the dark side of the human soul. This story includes mostly characters that are at least dark grey in the spectrum, but that doesn’t make them any less interesting or engaging to watch. The end result is very entertaining.
