Weathering with You: this Shinkai Makoto modern-day fable tells a relatable story, at its core, of a young boy looking for his place in the world. There are fantastic elements that make this tale distinctive and an ecological bend to its worries, but it’s the relatability of the protagonists that truly stays. Truth be told, that and the immense beauty of the animation: the characters are all lovingly designed and animated, but the quality of Tokyo’s recreation here is off-the-charts. The city is busy, colorful, and the way buildings, streets, and trees are touched by its dynamic light (which is required by the story) is astounding. The voice acting is quite good, with Mori Nana and Daigo Kotaro creating the charming pair. The music, by Radwimps, is beautiful.
