The Awakening of Motti Wolkenbruch: Michael Steiner’s comedy is a good mix of funny and touching, as it tells the story of a comic institution, the Jewish mother. It makes fun of the mother-son relationship but in a very caring way, as it talks about how some traditions can lock the search for happiness. Joel Basman is rather funny as the insecure, bumbling young man searching for love; Noémie Schmidt is very lively and charming, a convincing object of his passion; Inge Maux is hilarious as the loud Jewish mom. The film has a tight pace, thanks to editor Benjamin Fueter, and has a generally effective, clean look.
