Frozen II: in spite of its two central characters being strong and engaging (and bonded by sisterly love), the story of Jennifer Lee and Chris Buck’s animated sequel doesn’t lift off much. The bones of the story are nice enough (which includes themes such as self-discovery and acceptance of the diverse), but the pacing is off, constantly broken down by the generally uninspired songs (songwriters Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez cannot repeat their success of the first film). Voice acting, led by Kristen Bell, Idina Menzel, and Josh Gad, is solid, but far from spectacular. What are spectacular, however, is the animation itself and the visuals in general: the character design, particularly the costumes (and the way they are animated) is simply stunning. The environments are varied, colorful, giving the proper sense of magic and enchantment.
