Fifth about The Seventh

Photograph: Ritesh Batra’s drama is a slow dance of a film, one that, as it tells the delicate story of two characters being pushed to live a life they don’t particularly want. It’s a story that allows a look at the cultural habits of the country, always an enrichening experience. The two main characters are engaging, which helps to hold the interest, even when the film is too emotionally quiet for its own good. Sanya Malhotra and Nawazuddin Siddiqui are both nice performers, doing well with the quiet acting called for. The pace is leisurely, giving ample space for the story and characters to breathe. Overall, the film has a very simple look, one that doesn’t distract from the story.
