Fifth about The Seventh

A Faithful Man (L’Homme Fidèle)

A Faithful Man: Louis Garrel’s romantic dramedy strikes out in all counts: as a comedy, it’s rarely any fun; as a drama, the main characters are uninteresting, dull, shallow; as a romance, the characters present little chemistry to each other. All in all, it’s hard to care about anything that happens with any character in the film. If the performances are unimpressive across the board, at least the casting is spot-on: Laetitia Casta looks the young widow seductive part, Lily-Rose Depp looks the ingénue, Garrel himself looks the bumbling object of both of their affections. The film aesthetics are indifferent, but at least it recognizes it doesn’t have much of a story and has a short runtime.
