Isn’t It Romantic: Todd Strauss-Schulson’s romantic comedy is clearly thorn between embracing the tropes of the genre and making fun of them; at the end, it doesn’t really matter, because the film is so full of cynicism and shallow that it ends up not being funny, emotionally engaging or inspiring. The casting is obvious, riskless: Rebel Wilson as the disenchanted woman (she never finds the proper balance between sweet and cynical); Priyanka Chopra as the exotic rival; Adam Devine as the nerdy friend; Liam Hemsworth as the duplicitous hunk of a man. They are all boring choices, and the performances are not in any way noteworthy. The film looks polished, with color saturation and brightness complementing the art direction and costume design to accentuate the distinction between the two versions of New York.
