The 21st Annual Costume Designers Guild Awards will be handed Tuesday, February 19th, 2019.
As I have been doing for a few years, as we get into the awards season, I’ll post the fictional ballots for some of the guild awards, showing what my vote would be if I had one. I will, as a rule, abstain from my fictional vote if I haven’t seen at least half of the nominees. And to be perfectly clear, I’m not a member of any of these guilds and organizations.
The list of nominees can be seen here.
Here it goes:
Excellence in Contemporary Film: Mary E. Vogt, for Crazy Rich Asians
The costume design here is contemporary, but from a world region seldom seen in the West. It also becomes borderline fantasious at some moments, justifiably so considering the characters. (Not seen: Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again.)
Excellence in Sci-Fi / Fantasy Film: Ruth E. Carter, for Black Panther
Also inspired by a rarely seen geography, the costumes are distinctive, colorful and diverse, a fine mix of traditional and modern. (Not seen: A Wrinkle in Time.)
Excellence in Period Film: Sandy Powell, for The Favourite
The costumes are lavish, stylish, and full of personality, as each character has a few traits that are exclusive to them. (Not seen: Mary Queen of Scots.)
