If Beale Street Could Talk: it’s a beautiful film, very poetic without losing sight of a touching and strong story, that Barry Jenkins presents. The story remains relevant to this day, but it would not have so much strength if the two main characters were not so engaging, and surrounded by equally interesting supporting players. KiKi Layne and Stephan James form a beautiful couple; Layne, in particular, maintains a sweet, innocent look all the while, but also projects the resilience her plight asks for. Regina King turns a very fine supporting performance, as in fact does the cast in general. Nicely shot by cinematographer James Laxton; the film has the couple often looking straight at the lens, which in this case helps to raise the emotional connection. The pace, however, is a bit uneven, particularly in the second half. The musical score of Nicholas Britell is one of the most beautiful of the year, with the romantic theme in particular being memorable.
