Definitely, Maybe: the (almost too cutesy) whodunit structure of Adam Brooks’ romantic comedy allows for a bit of a head fake on the direction the story is taking, and that’s a good surprise. By the other hand, the female characters are very poorly fleshed-out (not that the main character is that much better), which is a waste of the nice cast; it does not, in any case, preclude the hope for a happy ending. Ryan Reynolds is fine as the charming, caring, somewhat clueless central character; Elizabeth Banks, Isla Fisher, and Rachel Weisz are all equally appealing as the three love interests; Abigail Breslin is very cute as the little kid. Peter Teschner’s smart editing give it some character; the film is cleanly but unremarkably shot by cinematographer Florian Ballhaus, making decent use of its New York locations.
