The 24th Annual SAG Awards will be handed on Sunday, January 21st, 2018.
As I have been doing for a few years, as we get into the awards season, I’ll post the fictional ballots for some of the guild awards, showing what my vote would be if I had one. I will, as a rule, abstain from my fictional vote if I haven’t seen at least half of the nominees. And to be perfectly clear, I’m not a member of any of these guilds and organizations.
The list of nominees can be seen here.
Here it goes:
Best Stunt Ensemble: Baby Driver
The title suggests what we are going to get: car chase sequences. And, oh boy, do they deliver: they are fun, long, varied, highly energetic.
Best Female Actor in a Supporting Role: abstain (Not the seen the nominated performances of Mary J. Blige, Hong Chau, Allison Janney, and Laurie Metcalf.)
Best Male Actor in a Supporting Role: abstain (Not the seen the nominated performances of Willem Dafoe, Woddy Harrelson, Richard Jenkins, and Sam Rockwell)
Best Female Actor in a Leading Role: abstain (Not the seen the nominated performances of Sally Hawkins, Frances McDormand, Margot Robbie, and Saoirse Ronan.)
Best Male Actor in a Leading Role: Gary Oldman (Winston Churchill in Darkest Hour)
Gary Oldman is, of course, greatly helped by the make-up, but he creates a well-rounded character even as he mimics the real man’s mannerisms. He also injects palpable emotion in the speeches. (Not seen the nominated performances of James Franco and Denzel Washington.)
Best Cast: abstain (Not seen Lady Bird, Mudbound, and Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri.)
