Fifth about The Seventh

3:10 to Yuma (1957)

3:10 to Yuma: the narrative of this Delmer Daves’ western is very simple, but tight and efficient; the stakes are clear, so are the objectives of each character, making this a very good study of them. The film has a very tight pace, and is able to keep the suspense high. It’s a fine cast: Felicia Farr and Leora Dana have small presences, but both are efficient and provide good insights into the main characters; Van Heflin showcases all the doubts, insecurity but also the inner strength in his performance; the showstopper, however, is Glenn Ford, charming, threatening and interesting. Charles Lawton Jr. camerawork is efficient, capturing well the beautiful external locations and the cramped room. The theme song, which comes back time and again, is very fine.
