Summer 1993: the starting point of Carla Simón’s drama is certainly heart-breaking; the film, however, unfurls in an unrewarding manner. It closely follows and quietly observes as the protagonist adapts to her new reality; however, the character is unsympathetic, at times almost cringe-worthy, but always hard to care about. Laia Artigas plays her indifferently, at best; Paula Robles is more endearing (which is partly due to the character and character’s situation, to be fair); Bruna Cusí is fine in a thankless role. The setting is a nice one, but the choice of use of handheld camera by Simón and director of photography Santiago Racaj doesn’t work: it doesn’t make sense, and makes it harder to watch the action.
