The Lost City of Z: it’s completely appropriate that James Gray’s ponderous, serious, lovely film has so many dreamy frames and shots, as it’s telling the story of one man’s dream (and obsession). Cinematographer Darius Khondji finds beauty in the deep and lush Amazonian jungles, muddy trenches, stuffy British rooms, and everything in between; his lighting is always enticing, as is its absence. But the photography is just icing on the cake, as the story is a nice, thematically rich one; the characters are interesting and well-defended by the good cast. Charlie Hunnam is very contained and convincing in the main role, and he is well-supported by Sienna Miller (who has a strong character to defend), Robert Pattinson and Tom Holland. Production values are top-notch, including costume design and art direction.
