A Brighter Summer Day: Edward Yang’s film is a magnificent and rewarding journey. A patient, detailed, caring look at one family and the enviroment that surrounds it, this drama has universal elements that allow for great emotional engagement, along with great many details which are specific to the setting (and, therefore, utterly enrich the experience). The story flows unhurriedly, giving time for the details to soak in, as well as for the beauty of Hui Kung Chang and Longyu Zhang’s camerawork to register properly (the camera movements are wonderful, as are the static frames). The production values are top-notch, beautifully realized throughout the whole epic scope. Acting is very delicate and effective; Chen Chang’s debut a great one.
