Café Society: Woody Allen crafts his movie well: Santo Loquasto’s production design is gorgeous, as are Suzy Benzinger’s costumes; Vittorio Storaro cinematography captures it all beautifully (even if the golden hues are, at times, overdone); the cast is in fine (but not spectacular) shape, in particular Kristen Stewart (who is very endearing in the film). Nevertheless, the story feels disjointed in its two halves (which are somewhat tired, albeit a bit interesting), and the dialogue isn’t particularly sparkling (the voice-over is quite flat). All in all, unremarkably entertaining.
