X-Men: Apocalypse: Bryan Singer’s film goes with an oversimplified story to tell, one that forgoes any sub-text or much insight into the characters (most, particular the new ones to the trilogy, are just paraded for the connoisseurs, paper-thin and banal); while that is somewhat par for the course for the genre, but this particular series had been able to get some sub-text before. The large cast is, quite expectedly, not given much to do: Michael Fassbender is the sole exception. Newton Thomas Sigel’s images are dark, murky, and the special effects, overblown.
