Carol: Todd Haynes has a very delicate and touching story to tell, and he does so very elegantly; while the story is somewhat low-wattage emotionally, that’s consistent with the film’s setting. And how well reproduced that setting is: Sandy Powell’s costumes, Jesse Rosenthal’s art design are wonderful, so gracefully captured by Edward Lachman’s camerawork. Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara are both equally superb, playing beautifully off each other. Carter Burwell’s score punctuates the film perfectly.
