Spotlight: the story being told here is powerful and touching, and Tom McCarthy’s film tells it well; the storytelling is simple, direct, comprehensive, a good adult entertainment. For better or for worse, there’s little emotional grandstanding; one of the results is that acting is low-key but very solid; Stanley Tucci is the stand-out, Michael Keaton is in good shape, and so is Liev Schreiber. Mark Ruffalo is a bit manneristic, however. The craft follows suit: Masanobu Takayanagi’s camerawork and Tom McArdle’s editing are efficient and restrained.
