The next stop in my tour of guild awards is the Directors Guild of America, to be presented January 25th. Here is their list of nominees.
Not to sound like a broken note, but given the wide quality of the films in 2013, there were many names that could be added to this list without any loss of quality. My fictional ballot, however, would be:
Best Director – Feature Film: Alfonso Cuarón for Gravity
Mr. Cuarón (not only because he, after all, co-wrote the screenplay) proved to be the perfect choice to tell the story of Gravity; his visual style maximizes the immersion, and therefore the emotional impact. He was able to combine camera work, editing and visual effects flawlessly, at the same time that he was able to get Sandra Bullock to give a physically demanding but touching performance. All the other nominees would be extremely deserving winners in most years, but in 2013, Cuarón directed something truly special.
