Samurai II: Duel at Ichijoji Temple: interesting enough, but still needs to be seen as a part of the whole. As a stand-alone, it feels like something is missing. Again, I’m mostly impressed by 3 things: Mifune (as usually is the case), the camera work (beautifully revealing dolly and crane shots) and the music (it’s very Western-y, which fits the story). Samurai I: Musashi Miyamoto: as is often the case with series that were planned as such, judging this as a stand alone is tough. Particularly in this story, where the characters are simply in the process of taking shape, and when they do the movie is over. It’s interesting enough that I wish I could watch the next one right now. The use of dolly is wonderful, and Toshiro Mifune is indeed a force of nature.

Salt: in every movie, or even in every story we are told, there is some measure of suspension of disbelief that is called for. Well, whatever they asked for in this film was more than I was willing to provide. In addition to that, characters that are basically all unpleasant. Not the best afternoon I had watching movies recently, sadly.

Drunken Angel: I was able to appreciate it more than like it. I’m always impressed by how well Kurosawa navigates in different genres. But maybe today was not the best way to watch it: I needed something else, I don’t know what yet.

Cyrus: OK, I suppose. A bit boring in the middle, in spite of good characters and a decent story. Moderately funny, not as much as the public in the show seemed to think. The camera work and the editing were, respectively, majorly and minorly annoying.

Inception: quite impressive, for summer fare particularly but not only. Fascinating story, some awesome action set pieces, great editing. I don’t think it’s Christopher Nolan’s best work (Memento and The Dark Knight are better). One thing bothered me: Ellen Page is used a bit too much for exposition purposes. I could have done without some of her dialogues. I like when the director trusts that I can understand stuff.

Io Sono L’Amore: beautiful movie, the old-fashioned look and feel works greatly for it, from the credits to the shots. It sometimes lingers a bit too long on its beautiful images. I can’t help but love that it deals with a traditional Italian family coping with the realities of a changed today. Its blueprint is one of my favorite movies.

Stagecoach: still great, very exciting. It’s a great array of characters in display there, and John Wayne’s introduction remains great. 1939 was indeed a magical year for movies.
