Until the Day Ends: Jelena Maksimović’s poetic and ponderous, so very ponderous, drama tells the story of a student, knee-deep in the 2025 Serbian protests, who believes she and a friend (who is from the other side of the aisle) may have killed someone after throwing a rock. Lena Trifunović plays the protagonist as the embodiment of punk spirit, independent and rebellious; Andrija Krivokapić plays the physically imposing friend of her brother. The images, by cinematographer Paul Spengemann, are often mesmerizing, but the combination of long takes, soft focus, and slow camera movements results in a glacially paced film (the editor is Jan Klemsche). It’s a very tough sit, but not one fully devoid of interest.
