Three Goodbyes: touching and delicate, Isabel Coixet’s drama follows a couple who, one night, argue, split up, and go their separate ways. The film looks at both of them, but mostly her, who discovers deeper issues to deal with. The web of relationships is beautiful and easy to root for, as the characters are generally engaging despite their possible flaws. The acting is quietly efficient throughout: Alba Rohrwacher, as the sad PE teacher, is particularly excellent and at the heart of the film; Elio Germano, as her ex, a talented chef, is also strong. Silvia D’Amico and Francesco Carril play the protagonist’s sister and a colleague, respectively. Editor Jordi Azategui navigates through those characters and relationships rather nicely, and cinematographer Guido Michelotti captures much of the action with a dreamy quality. Very strong use of music.
