All You Need Is Kill: AKIMOTO Ken’ichiroo and NAKAMURA Yukinori’s animated adaptation tells the story of a young soldier who gets into a time loop, repeating her days during an alien invasion, as she tries to figure out a way to survive and get rid of the invaders. Every day she tries to learn something new, and some of the entertainment value comes from the repetition. This is the second adaptation based on the same book, but the story here takes a very different direction compared to the first one. Alas, the film seems to be in a rush to end all of a sudden, which hinders the proper understanding of the plot and detracts from the experience. MIKAMI Ai plays the protagonist well, an initially dispirited person who realizes her prowess is the only hope; HANAE Natsuki plays one ally she gains along the way, a timid boy who is nevertheless instrumental. The animation is simple but effective, with the protagonist given a distinct and recognizable look, and the rich colours being a nice opposition to the darkness of the situation.
