Fifth about The Seventh

When the Light Breaks (Ljósbrot)

When the Light Breaks: this heartbreaking drama, by Rúnar Rúnarsson, tells the story of a young woman dealing with the disappearance of her secret boyfriend as a major incident unfolds in an Icelandic tunnel. By force of circumstances, she needs to keep the depth of her pain under wraps. The film, about hidden feelings, naturally can seem cold at times, but the story moves quickly and effectively (the film was edited by Andri Steinn Guðjónsson). Elín Hall’s performance as the protagonist is mostly pent-up emotions, but she manages to barely hold it together beautifully, and that makes the whole film work. The acting by the rest of the cast is fine, but not particularly memorable. Cinematographer Sophia Olsson creates some beautiful, evocative images.
