Too Late to Die Young: Dominga Sotomayor’s serene, delicate slice-of-life film chronicles the lives of a small ecological community in Chile, mostly two teenagers and a younger girl. The film deals with their dreams, disappointments, and budding love lives. The setting is 1990 Chile, but the coming-of-age tale could be set anywhere, at any time, with no relevant changes, and this universal feeling is a strength. Acting is very naturalistic and subdued. Demian Hernández (a trans actor who played the role before his transition) has a striking face, but the character (a girl with dreams of leaving) is too one-note. Antar Machado plays the boy enamored with her, and the character is livelier. Cinematographer Inti Briones’ work is exquisite; both his framing and lighting are exemplary, giving the film a beautiful visual identity. Art director Estefanía Larraín gives the community quite an interesting look, as well.
