Fifth about The Seventh

Chicks (La Vie au Ranch)

Chicks: Sophie Letourneur’s slice-of-life dramedy focuses on a group of college friends, mostly girls who live together. The film is interested solely in their social life: partying, love lives, and get-togethers. As such, it may not always be interesting, but when is it ever when you look from the outside into a tight group? Or even, sometimes, from the inside too? The dialogue has a messiness and a lack of direction which feels very naturalistic. Sarah-Jane Sauvegrain plays the main character, a woman who seems to be utterly lost in life, so convicingly that it makes one wonder if this is not a documentary disguised as a fictional film. The “messy” camerawork of cinematographer Claire Mathon and the editing of Michel Klochendler reinforce that sense.
