All of Us Strangers: Andrew Haigh’s drama is a beautiful and sensitive chamber piece, with a handful of speaking roles; it tells the story of a writer who meets a neighbor in an otherwise empty apartment building, at the same time he connects with the ghosts (not quite literally, but not too imprecisely either) of his long-dead parents. The conversations he has, with both his parents and his would-be lover, are delicate and insightful. Andrew Scott gives a wonderful performance as the protagonist, a man still dealing with his past and present. Paul Mescal gives a likewise great performance as the man he meets, someone who is in some ways more attuned to his reality already. Claire Foy and Jamie Bell round up the cast as the parents, both giving nice performances. Cinematographer Jamie Ramsay’s images have an intimate, dreamy feel to them, a great fit for the story being told.
