Fifth about The Seventh

Reprise (2006)

Reprise: sad but hopeful, Joachim Trier’s drama follows a pair of friends, both budding young writers dealing with the development of their careers and relationships, romantic or otherwise. The film is playful with its structure (fine work by editor Olivier Bugge Coutté), with a droll and dry voice-over presenting a few asides and what-ifs. The two protagonists are both engaging and well-defended by Anders Danielsen Lie (who plays the most troubled of the two) and Espen Klouman Høiner (who plays the most centered and, effectively, the emotional core of the film); Viktoria Winge plays the on-and-off girlfriend with the proper combination of charm and awkwardness (with the situation). Cinematographer Jakob Ihre uses a handheld camera that doesn’t feel out of place. The music, both the punk rock tracks and the original score, composed by Ola Fløttum and Knut Schreiner, is also a great match to the whole.
