Fifth about The Seventh

Dogtooth (Kynodontas)

Dogtooth: Yorgos Lanthimos embraces the bizarre as he tells the story of a couple who, for reasons never stated but implied, keep their three young adult children (two daughters and one son) in an extreme state of sheltering. The film is entertaining but with a great sense of unease, as it is clear that this scheme is not meant to succeed in the long run. The performances are cold and straight, letting the situation’s absurdity speak for itself; that tone contributes to the general sense of weirdness. The best of the bunch is Angeliki Papoulia, who plays the oldest and most rebellious daughter, but the acting is generally interesting. The film mostly takes place in one house, well-put together by Elli Papageorgakopoulou, who also designed the costumes that accentuate the childishness of the kids. Editor Yorgos Mavropsaridis gives the film a nice pace.
