Fifth about The Seventh

Confess, Fletch

Confess, Fletch: Greg Mottola’s comedic mystery film is an example of a movie that tries too much: overstuffed with plot to the point of being non-sensical and feeling rushed, overstuffed with one-line zingers that try to be amusing but are not, really. The protagonist is a journalist that’s trying to locate a few stolen paintings when he is involved in a murder investigation. And that’s about only half of what is going on. Jon Hamm is effective as the barely sufferable main character, a man who is not nearly as smart and smooth as he thinks he is. Lorenza Izzo is decent eye-can but little else. Ayden Mayeri and Roy Wood Jr. are OK as the pair of hapless homicide detectives that have to deal with the protagonist. The film looks and souds serviceable but not much beyond it; the exception is the soundtrack, that contains a few nicely chosen jazz tracks, but that’s very minor.
