Fifth about The Seventh

Everybody Loves Jeanne (Tout le Monde Aime Jeanne)

Everybody Loves Jeanne: Jeanne herself, the protagonist of Céline Devaux’s dramedy, may be the exception to the title: after her ambitious environmental project goes under and her mother dies, she doesn’t seem to love herself all that much. Or at least that’s what her inner voices suggest, played with whimsical charm in animation. That part of the film is its most intersting aspect, even if this Greek chorus can be a bit too on-the-nose at times. The protagonist, played effectively but unremarkably by Blanche Gardin, is a bit too inert; it’s justifiable, but that doesn’t make her any more interesting to watch. Laurent Lafitte plays a clingy old schoolmate she meets, and his character is a bit too precious about his quirks, but his awkwardness is nevertheless a bit charming. The film is aesthetically pleasing, but beyond the lovely animation, it’s not particularly novel.
