Fifth about The Seventh

Una (2017)

Una: unapologetically disturbing, Benedict Andrews’s drama tells the story of a young woman who, many years later, finds the man who sexually molested her when she was 13 years old and confronts him. The film doesn’t hide that it is an ugly story; instead, it drives the point even further by setting most of it in an unattractive workplace, messy, dark, and unflattering. In that sense (and in the particular way he frames Ben Mendelsohn when he is alone in the image), the work of cinematographer Thimios Bakatakis is very effective. The performances are fine but forgettable: Rooney Mara plays the victim as some damaged, confused, but resolute; Ben Mendelsohn, the pathetic perpetrator who sees himself as a victim. Riz Ahmed is not asked much. Ruby Stokes, as the character when she is young, sweet, and lost, is the best performance of the bunch. Composer Jed Kurzel’s score enhances the uneasiness.
