Fifth about The Seventh

Past Lives (2023)

Past Lives: delicate, elegant, and insightful, Celine Song’s drama looks into a pair of school sweethearts and how their relationship evolves after she and her family move out of South Korea. There is a beautiful sensibility in play, about how the characters talk, behave, and relate to each other. The performances by Greta Lee and Teo Yoo are subtle and quietly effective; this is not a film for showboating. She plays the happily married writer who nevertheless is shaken by meeting her old friend, and he plays the (apparently) very Korean engineer who never let her go from his mind. Aesthetically, the film is unfussed and efficient: cinematographer Shabier Kirchner finds many beautiful and meaningful frames throughout the film, and composers Christopher Bear and Daniel Rossen’s musical score is beautiful. Editor Keith Fraase gives the film a ponderous but rewarding pace.
