Fifth about The Seventh

Last Night (2011)

Last Night: Massy Tadjedin’s tight, talky drama focuses on four impossibly attractive people who are attracted, physically or emotionally, to the wrong ones. It is a rumination on fidelity and monogamy, interesting but ultimately too unambitious. The four performances are efficient but unremarkable: Keira Knightley plays the jealous young writer with a glass ceiling; Sam Worthington, her husband; Eva Mendes plays the cool seductress who is his co-worker; and Guillaume Canet, the charming and melancholic old flame. The runtime is short, and editor Susan E. Morse moves from one set of characters to another in what feels the most relevant moment. Composer Clint Mansell contributes with a nice, restrained musical score. Director of photography Peter Deming gives great charm to the night in New York and the beautiful interiors.
