Fifth about The Seventh

Concrete Utopia (Konkeuriteu Yutopia)

Concrete Utopia: science-fiction films very often put mankind under a microscope, and Eom Tae-hwa’s disaster movie is no different. The view is not flattering. It centers on a young married couple but looks into a community that forms in an apartment building after a large earthquake razed the whole city of Seoul. The film can sometimes get heavy-handed with the message it’s trying to convey, but then again, subtlety is hard to come by amid a gigantic disaster. The major characters each represent an idea in this situation; Lee Byung-hun plays the elected leader, a dark man with surprising charisma; Park Bo-young plays a young and caring nurse, at the other end of the spectrum; Park Seo-joon plays her husband, a piece in the middle of this conflict. The film (edited by Han Mee-yeon) is very well-paced, introducing new complications and factors but managing to not bloat. It also sells very efficiently the sense of a city in ruins. The use of music is interesting, with the lighter tone of the score (composed by Kim Hae-won) in stark conflict with the weight of the situation, particularly early on.
