Anatomy of a Fall: Justine Triet’s incredibly well-acted film tells the story of a writer who goes to trial after her husband falls to his death. The film smartly keeps things ambiguous, which gives more weight to certain characters’ decisions and interactions. It moves smoothly from setting the table to the trial itself, a very strong editing work by editor Laurent Sénéchal. Sandra Hüller is fantastic as the protagonist; a somewhat cold woman who nevertheless carries a lot of pain from a sinking marriage, as evidenced in a great and revealing (to a point) flashback. Her son is played beautifully by Milo Machado Graner, a kid discovering how much pain there truly was in his household. The supporting players are equally effective. Cinematographer Simon Beaufils captures it all with an elegant and unadorned camerawork.
