Fifth about The Seventh

Knit’s Island

Knit’s Island: Ekiem Barbier, Guilhem Causse, and Quentin L’Helgouac’h’s documentary examines the many virtual communities formed inside a videogame. Particularly early on, it caters mostly to the uninitiated in internet communities in general and groups within multiplayer games in particular. Still, the film eventually finds its stride as the filmmakers and the public get more used to the idea behind the forming of such communities. Not coincidentally, that happens when several people become more recurring in the narrative, resulting in deeper and more engaging, touching conversations. Interestingly, most of the film seems to have been “shot” pre-pandemic and social isolation. The quotes are warranted since the film takes place (almost) fully within the virtual world, but they still are able to find nice images and give a cinematic feeling to the whole experience, despite the clear limitations of the game’s engine. That’s not a stunt but is aligned with the way those people relate to each other; anything else would be a betrayal to those communities.
